Description

Minimum Pre-Order Quantity: 15 chicks (min 5 per chicken breed, bantams not included) For orders less than the species' minimums, please stop by our Loretto, Elk River, Stillwater, Forest Lake or Maple Plain stores (see all locations HERE). Stores will have live female chicks (pullets) in store starting in March. In store chick breeds will rotate throughout the season.

Spikes & Houles is a licensed poultry dealer and can only sell live birds in the 5 retail locations in Minnesota and they must be picked up at a store location (they cannot be delivered to you). Our Chicks cannot be shipped out of state.

We are so proud of our meat birds here at Hooverā€™s that we just had to name one after our little town of Rudd, Iowa. This "haus" loves to free-range and finishes out slower than the Cornish Cross Broiler, but the wait is worth it! The Rudd Rangerā„¢ is a versatile bird that can be raised in more confined areas or free-range environments but prefers the latter. Just like our wonderful Rudd residents, these birds are docile and get along with most other breeds. They have red plumage with dark tails and wing feathers. When dressed, the Rudd Rangerā€™sā„¢ body is more proportional compared to a broiler, making the dark meat almost equal to the breast meat.

Help and Advice

Details

If you want the birds to be a consistent weight at market, purchase either all pullets (hens) or all cockerels (roosters). If you want them to mature at different sizes, purchase straight run.

  1. Restrict access to feed to 10-hours per day for the first three to four weeks. Be sure the chicks have adequate feeder space so most of the chicks can eat at the same time.
  2. Limit protein in the feed to 20 ā€“ 22%. We recommend the use of NatureServeĀ® Chick Starter/Grower which contain 20% protein.
  3. Limit light to natural day length or 12-hours (whichever is longer).
  4. Keep chicks warm with good ventilation but avoid drafts.
  5. Keep air quality high by keeping ammonia low.
  6. Do not use straw for litter ā€“ use wood shavings.
