Overseeding My Lawn

Create a lush green lawn by following our Spikes Experts advice. Overseed with the right combination of grass seeds and using thorough aeration techniques, fertilizer, and crabgrass preventer.

A spreader is the perfect way to broadcast seed and fertilizer.

Follow our 7 step process:

    1. Mow your grass short at a height of 1½ to 2 inches.
    2. Rake the area thoroughly with a garden rake or landscape rake taking care not to tear out too much of the existing lawn.
    3. Aerate your lawn. Aeration improves your lawn’s appearance, usability, and ability to absorb water from irrigation. It increases nutrient uptake and helps to break up compaction, allowing roots of existing grass to breat
he. A “core” aerator pulls up plugs of soil and is more effective than one that simply pokes holes. Leave soil cores on top of the lawn to help grass seed germination.
    4. Broadcast starter lawn fertilizer and crabgrass preventer. Use Myke Turf Growth or Fertilome New Lawn Starter.

    5. Broadcast your grass seed mix.  Gertens carries a wide variety of seed to suit every condition. Use overseeding rates listed for mix per 1000 square feet. Use a hand spreader for small areas and a broadcast spreader for large areas. For a more uniform seeding, broadcast one-half of the seed in one direction and the other half in a direction perpendicular to the first.

    6. Rake lightly and thoroughly with a leaf rake to ensure good seed to soil contact which increases germination.

    7. Watering is critical. Water on a regular schedule to keep seed and soil moist until germination.

Sunny locations and dry weather will require you to water more frequently. Using a timer will help you achieve an even growing environment.
