Feeding Mealworms, Grubs and Crickets to Poultry & Wild Birds

Spikes carries dried mealworms & grubs in a multitude of sizes from 3.5 ounce to 5 pound bags. Dried insects are a great addition to add to any bird's diet from chickens to wild birds. See all that we carry here.

Insects are very high in protein, almost 50%, so a small amount goes a long way. For the average chicken 1-10 mealworms are all you need to boost their protein intake.

Let's look at the reasons all birds can use a protein boost. Extra energy in the winter is very important for all birds but especially our wild feathered friends. Woodpeckers & overwintering Robins are insect eaters so putting out dried insects in the winter will give them an extra source of their natural food. The extra shot of protein will help all birds stay stronger & warmer in the cold weather and be able to lay healthy eggs sooner.

Birds need extra protein in molting seasons to grow back feathers. Anyone raising poultry for 4-H competition will find their birds to have more full colorful feathers with the protein boost.

Robins & Woodpeckers will come to your feeders for insects to help feed their young in the Spring. By watching where they fly you may be able to spot the nest & watch the nest full of babies grow up. When the fledglings are able to fly, the insects you provide will give them a boost on becoming strong birds to survive successfully.

The protein boost will help birds during Spring & Fall migration. These birds are hungry & exhausted during their journey so an insect buffet will be a great tool to attract them & build up their strength.

Just a few mealworms goes a long way to adding protein to any birds diet so they are actually a very economical way to supplement feeding the birds.
